The use of remanufactured toner and ink jet cartridges has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. The reaction from the printer and copier manufacturers such as Lexmark, Hewlett Packard and Xerox has been swift and draconian.

They claim and continue to claim that the use of remanufactured cartridges can cause considerable downtime and actual damage to you printer and copiers. When fear does not work they turn to the law and technology to keep the consumer from minimizing their cost and doing their part to preserve the environment.

The industry has introduced user licenses and lock out chips as a means of forcing you to use their supplies. In short they have done everything possible to crush an industry that has turned out to be significant impact on the environment.

Not only have they attacked the remanufactured toner cartridge but recycled paper also; unless of course it has their label on it.

Nowhere does “you get what you pay for” apply more than it does in the remanufactured toner industry. Not all toner cartridges are created equal and not all manufacturers are capable or willing to apply the quality processes needed to assure that the product will be as trouble free as possible.

Paper: Quality is everything

There are some 30% post consumer waste (PCW) papers in the marketplace that are as good and in some cases better than virgin bond. Their brightness is as high or higher in some cases. The ultimate sheet of paper contains at least 30% PCW and unbleached. The higher the brightness the more chemicals needed. For most inter-office communications a low brightness 30% PCW sheet will work in both copiers and printers.

For high end applications there are also several sheets that contain a considerable amount of PCW with brightness and a glossy finish that will meet the requirements of almost any color copier or printer.

Paper with too high a ground wood content will not run well in high speed copier or printer applications. However, the paper industry has made great strides in the manufacturing process to insure that PCW based paper products function to manufacturers’ specifications.

The impact that the use of recycled content paper has on air and water quality is significant as is the major savings in energy consumption.

Green Office products are plentiful, economical with quality and functionality that is equal to any virgin product on the market. The EPA has set standards for Green Office products that many manufacturers have taken the effort to meet. Many of these products contain a significant amount of PCW from paper to plastic.

You can fill your office with Green Products from file folders, to pads, and sticky notes to clip boards and binders. There is no reason today not to utilize products with recycled material content, recyclable materials and ozone friendly chemicals.
